With the millions of websites and articles that list must-have baby items, it’s so hard to tell who is being honest about a great product and who is just trying to sell you something. I’ve created this post by compiling the feedback and opinions of hundreds of women to find out what products can be the most beneficial. Don’t forget to create a registry to get everything you need – I prefer to use Amazon Baby Registry as they keep track of all the names and addresses of those who bought gifts for you so you can easily send thank you notes!
Here are the products that parents love the most (P.S. Some of the links are crazy long because they are affiliate links):
Swing or Rock ‘N Play
A place to set baby while you complete other tasks is imperative to your survival. If that place can also soothe, you’re golden! Seriously, it’s best to have a swing like the Fisher-Price Sweet Snugapuppy Dreams Cradle ‘n Swing, White or the 4moms, rockaRoo, Baby Swing, Grey Classic. I also recommend this Fisher-Price Baby Bouncer, Luminosity if you’re looking for something that’s a little less expensive and takes up less space (I used this bouncer so I could take a shower and it was lightweight enough to move from room to room with my hands full).
White Noise Machine
A noise machine that can play a variety of sounds is an absolute must, especially once baby gets a little bit older and wakes up at any little noise. This Big Red Rooster BRRC129 Baby Sound Machine with 6 Sounds, White will be your new best friend, I promise! If you need one for on-the-go (perhaps in the stroller), try the Project Nursery Portable Sound Soother with Nature Sounds, White Noise and Lullabie
These pacifiers are amazing because your little one can hold onto them with ease and not lose them (and they are adorable!!). I recommend purchasing at least 2 of the same kind because this WubbaNub Infant Pacifier – Giraffe pacifier/stuffy combo is about to be your baby’s favorite thing.
Safety 1st Mombella Ellie Elephant Teether
So many people clamber over other super expensive teethers but the ones that seem to work the best are not the most expensive. Take the Safety 1st featuring Mombella Ellie Elephant Teether, for example. It has a variety of parts to chew on that vary in texture so baby can always find part of the toy to soothe those aching gums. In addition, this is the only teether that my baby could hold as early as 3 months without dropping. It’s so cheap that I even bought multiples! This comes in handy when the inevitable “I want to throw everything” stage hits. On top of all that, it’s so easy to clean because it’s one solid piece and dishwasher safe! Hallelujah!
The Owlet Smart Sock
This Owlet Smart Sock 2 Baby Monitor will monitor your baby’s breathing and heart rate to give you peace of mind. You can breathe a little easier during naps and bedtime knowing that you’re little one is being monitored in case anything goes wrong. This sock will notify you with an alert if anything seems amiss. It may be a little expensive but you can actually buy it now and pay later with no interest!
Rocking Chair or Glider
You may not use a rocking chair or glider right away but you will most certainly need this down the road. It’s best to purchase the chair or glider before baby is born so you can have it when it’s needed. This Stork Craft Hoop Glider and Ottoman Set was the one I personally use and I love it. You’ll love having it for nursing, story time, and for calming a fussy baby.
A thermometer like this one (MotherMed Baby Bath Thermometer and Floating Bath Toy BathTub and Swimming Pool Thermometer , Green Fish) will help you feel more certain that the bath water is just the right temperature. It’s important that baby is not being bathed in water that is too hot or too cold so it’s awesome to have a tool that can give you peace of mind. Now you won’t have to worry if the bath water is at a safe temperature!
Those little nails are so sharp and so hard to keep clipped or filed. My daughter was always scratching her face until I got a pack of baby mittens. They were a total lifesaver! I know some moms say they have never needed them but for me, I was nervous about clipping my baby’s nails in the beginning. I was relieved to not have to worry about her scratching herself in her sleep anymore and I didn’t have to nervously cut her nails constantly. My favorite are these Gerber Unisex Baby 4 Pack Mittens because they stayed on all night and fit comfortably.
Burp Cloths That Can Double as Blankets
Burp cloths are obviously super important with all the spit-up and drool to wipe but diaper bags can only hold so much. That’s why it’s great when something has a dual purpose. Look for small blankets that are made out of flannel so they are warm but also super absorbent – These Gerber receiving blankets are my favorite.
Baby washcloths are soft enough for baby’s delicate skin and have a million uses. I love that they are easy to keep separate from the other washcloths in my house so they don’t get used for cleaning or other tasks. I use these to freeze for teething purposes, to dry her bottom to ward off diaper rash, to wash/rinse her in the bath, and pretty much anytime I need a cloth for her. Since Best Bamboo Baby Washcloths Soft & Hypoallergenic Sensitive Skin Baby Wipes by Bamboo Organics are color-coated, I can easily keep the ones for her bottom and her face separate too.
Fragrance-Free Gentle Baby Lotion
Baby’s skin is so delicate so it’s imperative that you moisturize. My absolute favorite is this Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion, For Delicate Skin, Fragrance Free, 18 Oz. It has worked wonders to keep her skin soft and helped immensely when she had eczema.
Baby Bath Tub
Some people don’t use one of these and I have no idea what they do instead! The one I use can either fit in the sink or on the counter and has a hammock insert for when she was a newborn. It’s also great to put in the tub when baby is not quite stable enough to sit without the tub but is splashing up a storm. The First Years Sure Comfort Deluxe Newborn To Toddler Tub, Blue is the one I swear by.
A Diaper Caddy/Organizer
The diaper caddy is a basket that you can keep all of baby’s diaper changing needs and easily grab it when you’re going to another room. I highly recommend this Munchkin SaraBear Diapering Organizer, Brown for diaper changes on your bed in the middle of the night – it takes up very little space and has so many compartments. I also recommend this Munchkin Sarabear Portable Diaper Caddy, White Waffle for the rest of the rooms in your house – it is very attractive and has plenty of compartments for all of baby’s things.
A Versatile Diaper Bag
This is a given but there are so many diaper bags to choose from, how do you decide? My favorite is this PacaPod Mirano Black Designer Baby Diaper Bag – Luxury Black Tote 3 in 1 Organising System. It has separate pods for bottles/food and diapering needs so you can just grab the pod and go, if needed. I love to use the pods for our morning walks or for a quick run out when we won’t be gone long.
Another option that’s gaining popularity is to use a diaper backpack instead. I recently switched over to an inexpensive backpack diaper bag and I love it so far. These backpacks make it much easier to find what you’re looking for.
A Nursing Pillow
Nursing or bottle feeding a newborn is basically all you do for the first few weeks so it’s so important to be comfortable while doing so. My nursing pillow did just that! In addition, it allowed me to do other things while nursing like reading a book or surfing the internet on my phone. The Boppy Nursing Pillow and Positioner, Luxe Chevron Whales/Gray is super versatile through all the stages of baby’s first year (and the one I used and seriously recommend) and the My Brest Friend Original Nursing Pillow, Fireworks is super popular (I’m told it’s easier for nursing).
A Portable Play Yard
A place for baby to hang out when you’re out and about is an absolute must. I personally used the Graco Pack ‘N Play Playard with Reversible Napper and Changer, Nyssa in the living room while we were home because it held baby, even as a newborn, and doubled as a convenient changing table. This way, we wouldn’t have to figure out what to do with a changing table once baby didn’t need it anymore. Also, when baby gets bigger, you can lower the mattress and take off the changing pad portion so they can play in it.
A Good Thermometer
You have to have a thermometer at home for those nights when baby is super fussy and you’re not sure why or if baby feels unusually warm to you. You don’t want to have to rush out to a 24-hour store to scrounge for a thermometer that works for babies like this one: Metene Medical Forehead and Ear Thermometer,Infrared Digital Thermometer Suitable For Baby, Infant, Toddler and Adults with FDA and CE approved. I personally love this thermometer because it can also be used for older kids and adults.
Mommy’s Bliss Gripe Water, Liquid, 4-ounce bottle is a miracle worker! Whether it’s the hiccups, a tummy ache, or just general fussiness, this stuff really does the trick. Moms far and wide will tell you about this stuff and normally follow it up with a whole bunch of exclamation points (GRIPE WATER!!!!). It’s natural and can be given multiple times a day. Do yourself a favor and stock up because you will be using this stuff like crazy!
Crib Rail Covers
When those teeth start coming in, your little one will appear to turn into a beaver because they will chew on EVERYTHING! To protect your crib rails safely, try these amazing crib rail covers from Amazon: http://amzn.to/2n4idOi
A Video Monitor
Even if your little on will be sleeping in your room with you, odds are you won’t always be sleeping at the same time. It’s always a good idea to have a baby monitor like this one: http://amzn.to/2DWQ8Dn. This monitor has an excellent quality video screen that can be turned off when you only want the sound on. You can zoom in and move the camera from the monitor, it tells you the temperature in the baby’s room, and you can use multiple cameras with it just in case you have more than one little one to keep an eye on.
I could definitely add more to this list but I feel like this particular list of items can be used by any mom or dad in any living situation.
Free Stuff Tip:
After you’ve created your registry at Amazon, go ahead and create registries at Target, Buy Buy Baby, and anywhere else. They will all have free welcome goodie bags for you but you’ll have to go to the store to get it. You don’t have to add many items and you will love having all the extra baby items for free!
